Prayer Labyrinth & Gardens

What is a Labyrinth?

The labyrinth is a divine imprint that serves as a walking meditation, a path of prayer found in various forms across all religious traditions worldwide. St. Alban’s labyrinth is a replica of the one embedded in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France, dating back to around 1220. Walking the labyrinth creates a sacred time and space for prayer, meditation, and discernment. The labyrinth features a single path—free from tricks or dead ends. The twists and rhythmic turns clear the mind, relax the body, and refresh the spirit. You may even be drawn to go directly to the center to sit quietly.

THE STAGES

Walking The Path

Remember

At the Threshold of the Labyrinth
Take time to offer gratitude. You are invited to count your blessings and be thankful for people who support you and places that nourish you. You may choose to focus on a prayer, a mantra, or an intention.

Release

Entering the Labyrinth
This is the time to quiet your mind, let go of mental chatter, and release your burdens. You might want to connect with your breath or your footsteps as a way to open your heart and mind. Relax and move at your own pace.

Receive

Pausing in the Center
This is a place of reflection. Pause and stay for as long as you like. Listen to that still, small inner voice. In the safety of the labyrinth, have a heart-to-heart talk with yourself, with God, or with your Higher Power.

Return

Outward through the Labyrinth

When you are ready, retrace your steps. On the return journey, take with you what you have received. You may feel a variety of emotions, ranging from well-being and peace to a renewed longing for wisdom regarding your next steps. Embrace your experience.
